Let the Door Hit Ya

Good news comes in the morning, even on a Monday morning. John Bolton is stepping down as UN Ambassador. The most prominent thought this brings to mind is that it's not one moment too soon, and many months late.

Bolton's recess appointment as top man to an international body he's shown nothing but contempt for was one of the Bush administration's many acts of hubris. He was the Harriet Miers of international diplomacy, an ill-fitting dolt of a man with personality issues and political handicaps. His appointment signaled to the rest of the United Nations that, no, the US really doesn't give a flying pot of offal what the rest of the world thinks. He was the unflinching bull in the china shop of international relations. Congress never approved him for the job and never would have, not even with a Republican majority.

For a legislative body that has been a limp-wristed rubber stamp for the President, a giant toolbox of pliant acquiescence, it was a telling sign that maybe, just maybe, John Bolton was a horrible fucking choice for the job. With tail between his legs, he will exit in the next few days. I shudder to think how much taxpayer money was spent on this man's salary, or how far back he has set our international diplomatic ventures. Perhaps the administration will appoint a competent, diplomatic person to the post now that his horse of choice has been taken out to pasture.

But knowing the Bush administration, it will likely dig up some ghost of injustice past to stomp through the halls of the UN like Godzilla through Tokyo. I hear John Ashcroft is free, maybe we can appoint him with the task of totally emasculating the Geneva Conventions and isolating the country from the rest of the world. Maybe Harriet Miers isn't too busy? Qualifications obviously don't matter to the Bush cabal. I bet a little sweet-talking could bring Mike Brown out of whatever horse's anus he's nestled up to for a victory lap around New Orleans before snuggling into the warm embrace of pissing on the UN Charter.

Diplomacy matters. Try to hire someone who actually knows the meaning of the word.
